Despite pressure from China, the European Parliament welcomed the 14th Dalai Lama

Thunderous applause welcomed the Dalai Lama, who spoke of peace to the MEPs. The fight for Tibet's autonomy will continue peacefully.

China warned: if the EU received the Dalai Lama, there would be repurcussions. And there certainly were. Beijing cancelled the summit with the EU. Little impressed by those threats, the European Parliament made it a duty to welcome the 14th Tibetan spiritual leader. [...]

Next, the Dalai Lama will meet Council President Nicolas Sarkozy in Poland. A visit which could lead to commercial repercussions.
