Despite pressure from China, the European Parliament welcomed the 14th Dalai Lama

Thunderous applause welcomed the Dalai Lama, who spoke of peace to the MEPs. The fight for Tibet's autonomy will continue peacefully.

China warned: if the EU received the Dalai Lama, there would be repurcussions. And there certainly were. Beijing cancelled the summit with the EU. Little impressed by those threats, the European Parliament made it a duty to welcome the 14th Tibetan spiritual leader. [...]

As a guest of the European Parliament’s intercultural dialogue, the Dalai Lama’s message was universal in front of a full hemicycle. [...]

His Holiness’s visit was definitely a political one too. The Dalai Lama recalled China’s role as oppressor in Tibet’s search for greater autonomy. [...]

Despite his conciliatory approach towards China, the Dalai Lama confirmed his commitment to non-violent political action. His moderate speech was strongly condemned by China. Next, the Dalai Lama will meet Council President Nicolas Sarkozy in Poland. A visit which could lead to commercial repercussions.
