How to use the converter:
The Currency Converter can be used in several ways, described below:
1. To convert an amount from one currency to another at ECB rates*:
to convert, for example, 190 Euro in US Dollars according to ECB reference rates, type 190 in the first box. As currency A ("from") is Euro by default, and currency B ("to") is USD by default, you don't need to select anything else; the result is shown instantly.
to convert, for example, 100 USD to EUR at ECB rates, type 100 in the first box, choose USD for currency A and EUR for currency B. The result is shown instantly.
2. To convert an amount from one currency to another, at a parity you choose:
to convert, for example, 190 USD in GBP at the parity of 0.51 US Dollars to one British Pound, type 190 in the first box, select USD for Currency A, GBP for Currency B, check "Convert at the following parity" and type 0.51 in the parity box. The result is displayed instantly.
3. To convert an amount from one currency to another, through a third currency:
This option is useful when you want to change one currency to another through a third.
Let's say you are in France and you want to change 240 British Pounds to Swiss Francs (both are different from the currency of the country you are in - in this case, the Euro). Exchange offices in France will change your pounds to euro and then they'll change the euro to Swiss Francs (the single European currency is called euro in the plural, too).
If you know that the exchange offices buy British pounds at about 0.8 GBP for one euro and they sell Swiss francs at about 1.55 CHF for the euro, to see how many Swiss francs you'll get for the 240 pounds, do the following:
Type 240 in the first box, choose GBP for Currency A, CHF for Currency B, check "Convert using exchange rates against a third currency", check "foreign currency units per local currency unit", insert 0.8 next to "Buying rate for Currency A" and 1.55 next to "Selling rate for Currency B". The result is displayed instantly.
