    Abiotrophia defectiva

    Definition 1

    A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is nonmotile, nonsporulating, catalase and oxidase negative and produces lactic acid from glucose fermentation. A. defectiva is normally a commensal organism in the oral, genitourinary, and intestinal floras but may become pathogenic in response to underlying disease. (NCI Thesaurus)
