    Adenine Nucleotide Translocator-1

Expressed in heart, kidney, liver, skeletal muscle by human SLC25A4 Gene (Mitochondrial Carrier Family), 298-aa 33-kDa homodimeric Adenine Nucleotide Translocator-1 is an integral membrane protein embedded asymmetrically in the inner mitochondrial membrane that catalyzes transmembrane exchange of ADP and ATP and determines the rate of ADP/ATP flux between mitochondrion and cytosol. Strongly similar to murine Ant1, ANT1 contains 3 solute carrier (Solcar) repeats and the signature RRRMMM motif of nucleotide carriers; six alpha helices form a compact transmembrane domain. Defects in SLC25A4 are a cause of PEO. (NCI Thesaurus)
