    Breast Conservation Treatment

    Definition 1

Breast conservation treatment is defined as excision of the primary tumor and adjacent breast tissue, followed by radiation therapy. This procedure is also referred to as lumpectomy, segmental mastectomy, or partial mastectomy. (from Consensus Statements: Treatment of Early-stage Breast Cancer, 1990) (NCI Thesaurus)

    Definition 2

An operation to remove the breast cancer but not the breast itself. Types of breast-conserving surgery include lumpectomy (removal of the lump), quadrantectomy (removal of one quarter of the breast), and segmental mastectomy (removal of the cancer as well as some of the breast tissue around the tumor and the lining over the chest muscles below the tumor).
