    DNA Methyltransferase Inhibitor

Any substance that inhibits DNA methyltransferase, an enzyme required for DNA methylation. Inhibition of DNA methyltransferase results in hypomethylation of genomic DNA and cell cycle arrest at S-phase. Hypomethylation in malignant cells may also restore suppressor gene expression and re-establish controlled growth and differentiation. (NCI Thesaurus)
