    The ionized form of lanthanum (trivalent ion) with phosphate binding property. Lanthanum ion binds dietary phosphate and inhibits the absorption of phosphate by forming highly insoluble lanthanum-phosphate complexes that reduce the concentrations of serum phosphate and calcium phosphate.
