Human NOS2A wild-type allele is located within 17q11.2-q12 and is approximately 44 kb in length. This allele, which encodes nitric oxide synthase, inducible protein, plays a role in the biosynthesis of nitric oxide from L-arginine and molecular oxygen. NOS2A gene expression is up-regulated in liver cirrhosis and contributes to the progression of this disease state. The NOS2A gene is also involved in susceptibility to essential hypertension.
