    Olfactory bulb

    Pronunciation

    Definition 1

A rounded mass of tissue that contains several types of nerve cells that are involved in the sense of smell. There are two olfactory bulbs on the bottom side of the brain, one above each nasal cavity. The olfactory bulbs receive information about smells from the nose and send it to the brain by way of the olfactory tracts. (NCI Dictionary)

    Definition 2

Anatomical structure located in the vertebral forebrain that receives neural input regarding odors that have been detected by cells within the nasal cavity. The axons of olfactory receptor cells extend into the olfactory bulb. (NCI Thesaurus)

    Definition 3

Ovoid body resting on the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone where the olfactory nerve terminates. The olfactory bulb contains several types of nerve cells including the mitral cells, on whose dendrites the olfactory nerve synapses, forming the olfactory glomeruli. The accessory olfactory bulb, which receives the projection from the VOMERONASAL ORGAN via the vomeronasal nerve, is also included here. (NLM, Medical Subject Headings)
