    A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram negative, rod shaped bacteria in the phylum Proteobacteria. This species is motile, peritrichous, decarboxylase , citrase and esterase positive and can ferment adonitol, arabinose, arabitol, cellobiose, dulcitol, glucose, galactose, lactose, inositol, mannose, maltose, melibiose, ribose, sorbitol, and salicin. S. fonticola is found in water and soil and is not a pathogen. (NCI Thesaurus)
