    Sodium-Iodide Symporter

An integral membrane transport protein. Expression of the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) is high in lactating mammary tissue and in over 80% of breast cancers, but is not found in normal breast tissue. This suggests that radioactive iodine could be useful in diagnosing or treating breast cancers. (NCI Thesaurus)
