    Enzalutamide

    Pronunciation

    Definition 1

A drug used to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and did not get better with other treatment, including docetaxel. Enzalutamide binds to proteins called androgen receptors, which are found in some prostate cancer cells. These proteins bind to androgens (male hormones) and may cause cancer cells to grow. Blocking these proteins may keep cancer cells from growing. Enzalutamide is a type of antiandrogen. Also called Xtandi. (NCI Dictionary)

    Definition 2

An orally bioavailable, organic, non-steroidal small molecule targeting the androgen receptor (AR) with potential antineoplastic activity. Through a mechanism that is reported to be different from other approved AR antagonists, enzalutamide inhibits the activity of prostate cancer cell ARs, which may result in a reduction in prostate cancer cell proliferation and, correspondingly, a reduction in the serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) level. AR over-expression in prostate cancer represents a key mechanism associated with prostate cancer hormone resistance. (NCI Thesaurus)
