Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome

    Pronunciation

    Definition 1

An inherited disorder in which the risk of breast cancer (especially before the age of 50) and ovarian cancer is higher than normal. Most cases of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome are caused by certain mutations (changes) in the BRCA1 or the BRCA2 gene. People with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome may also have an increased risk of other types of cancer, including pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, and melanoma. Also called HBOC syndrome. (NCI Dictionary)

    Definition 2

An autosomal dominant inherited syndrome caused by mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. Patients are at high risk of developing breast cancer, particularly before the age of fifty, high risk of developing a second primary breast cancer, and high risk of developing both breast and ovarian cancer.
