This in vitro invasion assay utilizes matrigel, a reconstituted basement membrane, to assess the ability of cells to degrade and cross tissue barriers. This "in-vitro angiogenesis assay" can be used to screen potential anti-angiogenic compounds as well as to study angiogenic pathways underlying neoplasia. (NCI Thesaurus)
