Definition 2
Prior to the development of ROP in the premature infant, vascularization of the retina is incomplete or "immature". In Stage 5: Total Retinal Detachment, the retinal detachments are generally tractional and usually funnel shaped. The configuration of the funnel itself is used for subdivision of this stage depending if the anterior and posterior portions are open or narrowed. (NICHD)
