    Staphylococcus saprophyticus

    Definition 1

    A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is positive for catalase and urease and negative for coagulase, oxidase, and alkaline phosphatase. It can metabolize glucose, maltose, sucrose, turanose, mannitol, glycerol, fructose, lactose, trehalose and xylitol but not mannose, rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, ribose or cellobiose. S. saprophyticus is a commensal organism in humans and is a pathogen that causes urinary tract infections in women. (NCI Thesaurus)
